As we roll into winter, it’s time to think about our favorite 4-season cars. The VW Golf R32, specifically the IV – or 4th gen – R32, is one of the best. Below you’ll find our picks of top 5 boosted (turbocharged or supercharged) VW Mk 4 R32 cars for sale right now. Why boosted? Because boosted VR6’s make a beautiful sound, check out a sample here (sound clip from our #5 pick below):
Everything you need to know about the VR6 motor: Wikipedia has a great page, but to summarize: a VR6 is like a staggered inline 6. All cylinders share the same head – instead of two separate heads in a traditional V6 design. The camshaft and intake / exhaust port design is particularly interesting – since only two overhead cams actuate and open all of the valves (12 or 24 valves).
#1: Turbo R32 Track / Street Car
(Price: $22k, Location: OH) A self-proclaimed sleeper, this car was built with track time in mind. This car can apparently play with Porsche GT3s for a fraction of the cost, we don’t doubt it. Built motor, twin disk clutch, and a bunch of track goodies make this #1 on our list. Check out the car’s fast lap at mid-Ohio and other details here.
#2: Built Turbo Street R32
(Price: $22k, Location: NH) Not quite as track oriented, but featuring a built motor with headwork and a sweet turbo set-up landed it #2. Higher miles on the drivetrain – around 120k, but only 15k on the freshly built motor. We’re a fan of Precision Turbos, and this one features a 6262 snail. If you’re in New England, this is the one to get. Check out the full details here, and here’s a video of the car attacking some backroads. You’re welcome.
#3: Delicious GT30R Turbo R32
(Price: $18k, Location: NY) Really a tie for 2nd, this R32 looks spectacularly clean and features the HPA 495 turbo kit – running a GT30R turbo. We love the stock / OEM look, and the interior is super fresh. Though it appears to be running OEM / stock internals, which should be fine for street-only use. Check out the full details here.
#4: Turbo, bagged R32 – flashy
(Price: $25k, Location: PA) From a spec sheet perspective, this is a top 2 car – we only slotted it as #4 because of the looks. The Porsche wheels on the R32 are cool but we’re not digging the chrome, bagged look – but to each his own. The specs are impressive – built motor, another 6262 Precision turbo, twin disk clutch, and many more upgrades. Overall it’s a sweet package, check out the full details here.
#5: Supercharged VF Stage 2 R32 Bargain
(Price: $13.9k, Location: DC) This is the car in the video linked above, it sounds gorgeous. Overall a phenomenal deal – if you’re comfortable with the miles – around 109k, this is the one for you. It’s truly all OEM with the VF supercharger bolted on, and some supporting mods for the blower. Looks like a phenomenal deal for a clean, well kept R32. Full details here.
